Choir
The Opera Ballet Vlaanderen Chorus was founded in 1989 under its first chorus director Peter Burian. It immediately made a name for itself as a professional ensemble of outstanding quality in opera and concert performances.
Today, it is also involved in hybrid productions with the ballet company of Opera Ballet Vlaanderen, such as Satyagraha by Philip Glass in a choreography by Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui and C(H)ŒURS 2022 by Alain Platel. The chorus has around forty permanent members, some of whom also perform solo roles in opera productions. Past chorus directors have included Simon Halsey, Kurt Bikkembergs and Yannis Pouspourikas. Since 2014, the Opera Ballet Vlaanderen Chorus has been led by the Austrian conductor Jan Schweiger. The ensemble has been praised for its superb musicianship as well as for its acting prowess and impressive stage presence. In 2021, it was nominated as 'Best Chorus' at the International Opera Awards.
