The Opera Ballet Vlaanderen Symphony Orchestra accompanies the house's opera and ballet productions and is also showcased in symphonic concerts and music theater projects. Since its founding in 1989 under Rudolf Werthen, the orchestra has been led by chief conductors such as Stefan Soltesz, Marc Minkowski, Massimo Zanetti, Ivan Törzs and Dmitri Jurowski. The orchestra regularly makes appearances abroad (in Luxembourg, Paris, Rotterdam and Edinburgh, for example) and has been led by illustrious guest conductors such as Ingo Metzmacher, Eliahu Inbal, Silvio Varviso, Trevor Pinnock and Marie Jacquot. Since the 2019-2020 season, Alejo Pérez has been music director of the Opera Ballet Vlaanderen Symphony Orchestra. In 2021, the orchestra was nominated as 'Best Orchestra' at the International Opera Awards.
