Generation after generation, Sleeping Beauty, based on a 17th-century story by Charles Perrault, retains its extraordinary power to speak to the imagination. Sleeping Beauty was originally staged by Marius Petipa as one long celebration full of unexpected, enthralling variations on pointes. In 1987, the Brazilian choreographer Marcia Haydée revisited Petipa's ballet and added a number of exciting elements such as the charismatic fairy Carabosse.

Sleeping Beauty is a good example of the extraordinary complexity of classical ballet in the late 19th century. Virtuoso academic dance is combined with sensitive characterisation. The production by Marcia Haydée encompasses everything one could expect of a major classic: spectacular dance scenes, beautiful sets and costumes created by the notable Chilean designer Pablo Nuñez. In her version, the role of the wicked fairy Carabosse has been exceptionally expanded. Ordinarily, this is a mime role, but here, the character is given more body and presence through powerful solos and a distinctive character. Carabosse has become a male role, a figure who unites good and evil, beauty and ugliness, in a single person. An experience!
