Arias from Mozart’s 'Die Zauberflöte' and the related ‘Zauberoper’.

As exotic and philosophically tinted Zauberoper, steeped in Egyptomania, Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte (1791) was not the only one of its kind. Two now forgotten works orbit like satellites around Mozart’s indelible opera: Der Stein der Weisen (1790) and Das Labyrinth oder Der Kampf mit den Elementen (1798). Mozart was personally involved in the first of these two operas. Das Labyrinth… is a ‘sequel’ to Die Zauberflöte with music by Peter von Winter. For both works, Emanuel Schikaneder provided the libretto. Students of the International Opera Academy perform a sampling of these three intriguing operas on the main stage. A magical mix of evergreens and forgotten gems.
