An encounter between three generations of Czech composers in a programme based on The Makropoulos Affair (Janáček) – the opening production of the 2016-2017 season. What could be more fitting for a story about eternal youth than Janáček’s woodwind sextet Mladi or Youth – a trenchant, witty evocation of the composer's student years in Brno? A fine selection from the Slavic dances of Anton Dvořák offers an impassioned counterpoint. Pavel Haas was one of the few composers to study with Janáček. His woodwind quintet from 1929 is, like his entire oeuvre, a true revelation. The members of the (reinforced) Soffio Quintet include Arie van der Beek, oboe soloist for the Symphony Orchestra of the Flemish Opera.Afternoon concerts
Each month, the foyers of the Flemish Opera in Antwerp and Ghent open their doors for afternoon concerts that forge unexpected links with the operas currently on the programme. The literary themes of an opera, the context in which the composer worked and lesser-known works bring impulses to the programming. Musicians associated with the opera, singers from the youth ensemble of the Flemish Opera and external specialists in lieder and chamber music will take to the stage.
