Piano recital on the theme of play, chance and games: Debussy, Prokofiev, Kurtág & Cage
The Gambler by Sergei Prokofiev will be the climax of this season's theme at Opera Vlaanderen. Star pianist Jan Michiels will focus on diverse forms of musical play, as well as on the keyboard compositions of Sergei Prokofiev. The programme will feature a piano version of Claude Debussy's ballet Jeux (1913) – about a single tennis ball, one man and two women (!) – as well as selections from Music of Changes (1951) by John Cage and the exquisite Játékok (Games) by the Hungarian composer György Kurtág, along with several of Prokofiev's Visions fugitives. Prokofiev's devastating, incomparable Toccata, opus 11 (1912) is the proverbial icing on the cake.
New: this season the concerts will be held alternately on weekdays and Sundays. In Antwerp, the Sunday formula offers the perfect musical aperitif; in Ghent, the afternoon concerts will be held at 3 PM. In Ghent, you can combine the concert on Sunday with coffee and cake (€ 7 extra).
