A sampling of operas based on the Falstaff theme by Salieri, Nicolai, Vaughan Williams et al.

Although perhaps the best-known treatment, with his Falstaff, Giuseppe Verdi was hardly the only composer to bring Shakespeare's legendary rascal and knight to life on the opera stage. Works such as Antonio Salieri's Falstaff (1799), Otto Nicolai's Die lustigen Weiber von Windsor (1849) and Sir John in Love (1929) by Ralph Vaughan Williams gave Sir John plenty of musical and dramatic freedom to play, make merry and mischief. Members of the Young Ensemble of Opera Vlaanderen, mezzo-soprano Sandra Paelinck, baritone Simon Schmidt and pianist Pedro Beriso will present a superb range of musical highlights from lesser-known Falstaff treatments.
