Like thousands of other families in the 1930s, the Joad family has been forced – as a result of the Great Depression and an exceptional drought – to pack up and head west.
The setting for this epic quest is the legendary Route 66, the shortest way to the land of the orange groves. But reaching the promised land of California is one thing; building a new life there is another. Ultimately, the story of the Joads will prove to be one of false hopes: The sacrifices along the way are too great, and the rewards at the end of the journey are too small.
