A musical and cultural cross-section of the 1920s: Suite 1922 by Paul Hindemith (fragments); songs and piano music by George Gershwin, Kurt Weill, Paul Magritte, and more.

The 1920s are one of the most fascinating periods of the last century. Expressionism, Neue Sachlichkeit, neoclassicism, surrealism… It was a time of unbridled creativity and imagination. In connection with the original version of Paul Hindemith's Cardillac (1926), we are presenting a magnificent mix of styles that happily balances between avant-garde and entertainment; between jazz, salon music and diverse experiments. Hold on tight for an adventurous listening experience featuring songs by Gershwin as examples of late dada art, songs by René Magritte's brother Paul as ragtimes and tunes that enlivened the long voyages of the Red Star Line in their day. Female vocalists from the Opera Vlaanderen chorus and our star pianist Geert Callaert will be your guides on this musical journey that will include excursions into Belgian surrealism!
