Seasoned opera-goers might know the name of Franz Schreker from productions such as Die Gezeichneten and Der ferne Klang, but Der Schmied von Gent will likely mean nothing at all to them.

This final work by the Austrian composer and modernist is not just a musical discovery; Schreker’s treatment of Charles De Coster’s original story ‘Smetse Smee’ from Légendes flamandes is also quite a surprise. Peter De Smet guides you through the varied oeuvre of a once celebrated and later vilified opera composer pur sang. Piet De Volder, musical dramaturge for Der Schmied von Gent, zooms in on Schreker’s unique folk opera and the new production at Opera Ballet Vlaanderen.
