The Opera in Ghent still has its original ballroom, called the ‘Redoutezaal’. From the middle of the 19th century, the Ghent Société des Redoutes held a dozen balls for the nobility and bourgeoisie of Ghent every year.
The New Year’s Ball at the opera house continues this tradition. This year we will dance to the most beautiful operatic melodies by Verdi, Mozart, Rossini, Offenbach, Strauss and Bizet. Under the supervision of a dance master we will guide you through a potpourri of 18th, 19th and 20th-century social dances. Do you want to dance like Carmen or waltz like La Traviata? Would you like to dance a polonaise with Yevgeni Onegin, or rather a Contredanse with Don Giovanni or a minuet with Figaro, then this is a great opportunity for you.
Untrained dancers can come and rehearse in the afternoon at an initiation session.
