From the first day of the lockdown in March 2020, the flood of messages of support from our loyal audience, especially from our Friends, has been heart-warming. Many let us know how indispensable our performances were in their lives and there was a lot of sympathy expressed for the artists and other employees.
That support did not stop with words, but was also translated into action, more than ever before. In 2020, the non-profit organisation Friends of Opera Ballet Vlaanderen, together with all individual Friends, donated no less than 252,440 euros to the functioning of our house. Talk about a boost to morale!
We wanted to do something special at the relaunch this fall for all those strong shoulders that were there for us to lean on. That's why we are inviting one of the audience favourites for a unique recital: the Italian tenor Enea Scala, who could recently be heard in his spectacular role debut as Werther. At Opera Ballet Vlaanderen we also know him from roles such as Henri de Bruges in Donizetti's bel canto gem Le Duc d'Albe.
So, get ready for a varied recital with bravura and emotion and lots of 'italianità'. Afterwards, Enea will of course join you for a dinner in the sumptuous salons of the Ghent opera. Anyone who is not yet a Friend is certainly also most welcome to attend.
