Jevgeni Onegin is the typical ‘superfluous man’ commonly encountered in 19th-century Russian literature: cultivated, intelligent and sensitive, but incapable of emotional commitment and of finding his place in society. He is a dandy who wanders into the rural world of the Larin family, where he wins the heart of the dreamy Tatjana, who is addicted to novels. She sees the sophisticated Onegin as her passport to a different and more exciting world than the countryside, and the gateway to a new era. In defiance of social convention, she confesses her love to him, but he resolutely rejects her. After many years, at the end of his lonely odyssey in search of himself, Onegin the loner meets Tatjana as an adult. He realises that he has thrown away his own chance of happiness.

After the great success of Mazeppa, this is the director Tatjana Gürbaca’s second Tchaikovsky production for the Flanders Opera. Conductor Dmitri Jurowski is once again the enthusiastic musical director, who recently got introduced as our new Chief-Conductor.
Timing: approximately ca. 2h. 45min., pause included.
