Mahagonny is to be a paradise, a place of limitless pleasure, where everyone can live as he pleases. As controversial as the work was upon its creation in 1930, the flamboyant production by Calixto Bieito at the Flemish Opera which we will be remounting with a new cast, caused no less of a sensation.

We follow three criminals on the run. In the desert, they found the city of Mahagonny, aka Netzestadt or ‘trap city’. The aim is to steal as much money as possible from others and to build a fortune without having to work. Central to the story is the tragic love affair between lumberjack Jim Mahoney and Jenny Hill. Everything is going swimmingly for Jim as long as he has money, because without cash there can also be no friendship or love. The promised paradise of Mahagonny devolves with astonishing speed into an outright hell...

Composer Kurt Weill has given Bertolt Brecht's trenchant satire of capitalism a score that is bursting with sentimental ditties, jazzy tunes and parodies of works from the classical repertoire: opera meets cabaret!
