Andonis Foniadakis - Sharon Eyal

With Half Life, Opera Ballet Vlaanderen introduces a work by the Israeli choreographer Sharon Eyal for the first time. This extremely powerful performance is presented as a diptych with Palmos by Andonis Foniadakis, which was only able to have its world premiere online in the spring of 2021. Both works form a double bill in which the virtuosity and personality of the dancer are paramount. The music for both performances was developed in close association with the choreography.

The American pop singer Active Child wrote two new songs for Palmos, which, together with eight songs from his oeuvre, inspired Andonis Foniadakis to create a performance about the longing for connection. In a series of duets and small ensembles, developed from a contemporary approach to the classical ballet language, the Greek choreographer sketches interactions between people as fragments of memories of moments of connection – at times passionate and exuberant, at times imbued with a profound, introverted poetry.

Sharon Eyal earned her stripes at Ohad Naharin's legendary Batsheva Dance Company and went on to become an internationally renowned choreographer. She developed her unique contemporary movement language through a fusion between pop culture and classical dance. She is able to bring her dancers to an extreme physicality that sometimes feels very dark and mechanical and at other times, extremely emotional. In Half Life, together with choreographer Gai Behar, she investigates oppressive group dynamics from which one dancer manages to escape. The electronic score by Ori Lichtik, together with the impressive choreography, creates a hypnotic and overwhelming dance experience.
