Was Le nozze di Figaro a revolutionary piece in Mozart's time that put pressure on the established order? If we are to believe librettist Lorenzo Da Ponte, Mozart's first Viennese opera buffa would never have been performed if he himself had not convinced the emperor that the piece would not cause offense and that the music was beautiful. On this theme day, lecturer David Vergauwen explores the opera against the political background of Mozart's time. Why did he choose a play that was censored? How revolutionary was the opera? Analysing text and music, we learn how Mozart and Da Ponte play off the different classes – servant and master – against each other, where intrigue and confusion stand in the way of the search for love and happiness.
