KMSKA LATE: Jenůfa
Leoš Janáček
Leoš Janáček’s Jenůfa captures a poignant snapshot of a world where women face challenges simply because of their gender.
Opera seems to show no mercy for women. From Violetta to Madama Butterfly, from Isolde to Jenůfa, in the world of opera women often sing of their own demise. But when we look deeper into the female characters in many operas, we realise how effective this art form is in highlighting gender inequality and encouraging change.
Gender specialist Giulia Maci and double bassist José Reyes, leader of A Pocket Orchestra guide us through a musical as well as visual journey. We explore opera arias, performed by soprano Tineke Van Ingelgem, tenor Kwanhee Park and baritone Rueben Mbonambi. Amid the works of art in KMSKA, we meet intriguing heroines and reflect on gender inequality, both past and present, and on the meaning of freedom.
