An ode to the masses
With hypnotic precision, the French-Austrian choreographer Gisèle Vienne creates a micro-universe in Crowd in which time seems to stand still. She sharply analyses a group of people who meet at a late-night rave party and seem consumed by repressed desires. To the sounds of pulsating electronic beats and driven by raw emotions, they connect with each other. Gisèle Vienne creates fascinating and deeply human portraits by focusing on the emotional – and not the real – experience of time of her characters. She does this with cinematographic techniques such as loops, slow motion and fast forward. Crowd is without a doubt the celebrated choreographer’s key work, which is now being presented for the first time by a company other than her own. Crowd is a tribute to club culture, an ode to the crowd that holds the promise of community.
Original production by DACM / Company Gisèle Vienne (2017).
