In the theater, music and dance are often harmoniously interwoven. The interdisciplinary theater work Tournament radically questions this principle.
In this collaboration between the soloist ensemble Kaleidoskop, choreographer Adam Linder, composer Ethan Braun, and set designer Andrea Faraguna, music and dance engage in a competition that explores the tensions between the two disciplines. The choreographic episodes resemble combat exercises with elements of improvisation and display a combination of ballet, contemporary dance, and street dance. Meanwhile, Braun's composition uses the musical form of the étude as a symbol for the competition for virtuosity, almost to the point of exhaustion. The competitive interplay creates a dynamic in which music and dance mutually influence each other.
