From season 2019-2020 onwards, Alejo Pérez will be Opera Vlaanderen's new music director. He has been appointed by Jan Vandenhouwe, who will be our new artistic director in that same season.
Alejo Pérez is currently preparing for our inaugural opera production Lohengrin, premiering on the 20th of September. Earlier this year, he led the orchestra and choir through a well-received production of Pélleas et Mélisande.

A fresh perspective
Not a new face for our orchestra and choir, but definitely a fresh perspective to the house. The Argentinian Alejo Pérez has a proven track-record of his versatility as a conductor and his expansive repertoire. He effortlessly alternates between his internationally celebrated Mozart, Verdi and Wagner interpretations, twentieth century pieces and new creations.
"When I was leading last season's production of Pelléas et Mélisande, I immediately felt a great affinity with the orchestra and all the people involved. I believe that good chemistry and being on the same wavelength are absolutely essential in any artistic endeavour. That's why I see great potential in a long-term collaboration with Opera Vlaanderen."

What does the future bring?
Starting September 2019, you'll be able to admire Alejo in at least two operas - our season opener will be one of them - and three symphonic programs. He will also advise on matters such as appointing guest conductors, casting soloists, hiring new musicians and chorus members and curating the repertoire.
Welcome to the house, Alejo!
Would you like to get a sneak preview of our new music director? Come see Lohengrin! This production premieres on September 20th in Ghent and travels to Antwerp on the 7th of October.
