Bart Van der Roost is appointed as the new general manager of Kunsthuis Opera Vlaanderen Ballet Vlaanderen. He starts in this new role from May 2017 and follows in the footsteps of Lena De Meerleer who will retire at the end of the season.
In the past couple of years Bart Van der Roost (35) became known as co-founder and CEO of neoScores: a company producing digital music scores. In the past three years, the company became an international player and was awarded several times nationally and internationally as a successful start-up business.
During his career Bart Van der Roost has worked in front of and behind the scenes of the classical music industry. He graduated as a trombone player at the Lemmensinstitute, mastered an MBA at Vlerick Business School, was a freelance radio producer with Klara (Classical Radio) and was Head of Production with Brussels Philharmonic for more than five years.
Aviel Cahn, artistic director of Opera Vlaanderen, and Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui and Tamas Moricz, the artistic team of Royal Ballet Flanders, will remain at their posts. In the coming months current general manager Lena De Meerleer will make sure the transition will go smoothly.
Pol Bamelis, chairman of the Board of Directors: ‘Bart Van der Roost was convincingly the strongest candidate during the whole selection procedure. He brings a dynamic force as the head of this company. He is someone who lives and breathes for music and art, but who has also proven himself as a manager and who knows the digital challenges of the future. We are looking forward to our collaboration with confidence.’
Bart Van der Roost: ‘I’m looking forward to work together with the whole team of Kunsthuis Opera Vlaanderen Royal Ballet Flanders on the beautiful opportunities that lay ahead. I want to keep what is good and change what is necessary to make sure that this venerable institution can do what it is good at: producing very relevant and captivating opera, ballet and dance performances. I believe more than ever in the binding force of art in this society and I will, with great conviction, further strengthen and widen this binding force between Kunsthuis and all its stakeholders. In the coming months I will take the time to round up my operational role within neoScores NV where there is a very strong team to make sure this beautiful story grows.’
