#imaginationisalive: the coming months at Opera Ballet Vlaanderen

Normally, you would have already received our season programme in your mail box. Unfortunately, that will not be the case this year. But there is no need to despair: we are working on alternatives, both virtual and live, to keep bringing you the beauty of opera and ballet.

A change of plans for 2020

The impact of the coronavirus, combined with the fact that the preparation for our performances starts months in advance, are forcing us to re-evaluate our plans for 2020. This means we will not bring full-scale opera or ballet performances until the end of 2020.

Therefore, we will not be announcing a new season any time soon. We only want to present a season to you that we can guarantee, and that is just not the case at the moment.

This does not mean we sitting idly by. On the contrary: under the title #imaginationisalive, we are looking to reinvent ourselves in a lot of different ways to keep bringing you opera and ballet performances.

Alternative programme: #imaginationisalive

Very soon, we will launch a series of video performances, curated by artistic directors Jan Vandenhouwe and Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui. They are engaging choreographers and directors nationally and internationally to work with our singers, dancers and musicians to create these wonderful miniature pieces of art. Every couple of weeks, these performances will form the bridge between singing, dancing and music. We kick off the series with a performance by pricipal dancer Matt Foley and concert master Kristie Su.

In a second video, composer Steven Prengels brings 'Quartet': a nocturnal encounter between Jacques Tati and Richard Wagner on a rooftop in Ghent.

Concept & direction: Steven Prengels
Choreography & dance: Joseph Kudra
Cor anglais: Tom van de Graaf
Eyes: Davy Smets & William Helliwell

In the third video, Szymon Brzóska’s work for piano Murmuration of Starlings forms the acoustic landscape in which Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui transposes a turbulent collectivity into one single dancer’s body.

Music: Szymon Brzóska | Piano: Conal Bembridge-Sayers | Concept & choreography: Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui | Dance: Daniel Domenech | Outfit Daniel: Jan-Jan Van Essche

At the same time, we are working on a brand new podcast, that we hope to present to you this summer. We are also looking into the possibility to play live outdoor performances, or performances in smaller set-ups.

We can't promise anything, but we are investigating what is possible. So keep following us - there is a lot coming your way.
